Intarsiya

Workshops

The word "intarsia" is derived from the Latin word "interserere" which means to polish/wear. However, there was also a similar word "tausia" which referred to gold and silver being struck into another metal. That type of art was spread in Damascus. These two words had the same meaning, but after a while, one was used for woodworking and the other for metal. The word "tausia" is of Arabic origin, and there is no doubt that this art originated in the East. In the renaissance period, the intricate paintings created by the intarsia method, understood as the joining of cut pieces of wood to create images made up of numerous wooden parts, allowed for the creation of magnificent works of art.
